Mariner Energy Oil Rig Explosion in Gulf of Mexico
Multiple news sources are reporting that another oil rig explosion has taken place in the Gulf of Mexico. This time it’s a platform owned by Mariner Energy called the Vermilion Rig 38. Located 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana, the platform explosion involved 13 oil workers and one has been injured.
A platform owned by Mariner Energy Inc. in the Gulf of Mexico, 80 miles off the Louisiana coast, was struck by an explosion, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel said in a telephone interview.
U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Colclough has also told CNN that workers are in water immersion suits and are waiting to be rescued. He also said that apparently there is “no product” located at this rig so hopefully pollution will not occur as it did in the BP oil spill.
Mariner fell $1.16, or 6 percent, $22.19 at 11:43 a.m. in New York composite trading.
