That was quick. Netflix backtracked on their plan to split their services into two companies. Netflix would have been a streaming company while Qwikster would be a DVD-mailing service. After a slew of customer complaints, CEO Reed Hastings said they would not be going this route after all. No one wants to pay more money across two services that should be tied in to one company. The DVD mailings and the online streaming is definitely Netflix’s differentiator. No other company does it.
Netflix has lost 1 million customers since the original Qwikster announcement. Tony Wible, an analyst with Janney Capital Markets says: “Basically, these guys are desperate, and this confirms it. While this move doesn’t solve the company’s long-term issues, in the interim, at least it can try to accelerate some positive catalysts for customers and its stock price.”
What an awesome website. Why do I need to install a silverlight plugin to view what should be fairly simple web content? Hooters, 1997 called, they want their web site back.
I wonder if the Olive Garden story got press because of the Applebee’s story. Both restaurant chains have gotten media coverage for accidentally serving alcohol to young children. I wonder if the families could win quick settlement money from the restaurant?
The Applebee’s was in Madison Heights, Michigan and served a 15 month old dude margarita mix in his sippy cup. He had a 0.10 % alcohol level which can get adults arrested if they’re driving. He was released from the hospital without any permanent injury.
Andre Hall can’t believe the city off Pittsburgh demolished his house by accident. “Leave for the holidays – come back – and there’s a backhoe on my house.” Hall’s house was supposed to be demolished some time in the past, but he got a court order to stop it and had been making a lot of renovations to the house. Instead of demolishing the house next door, Andre Hall’s house got smoked anyway. The AP video below focuses in on a piece of equipment but does not mention the erroneous contractor by name.
Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was the best when I was a kid. It’s still the best now. So when I scooped up a nice NES game lot in Boston with some awesome titles like Zelda, Donkey Kong Classics, Marble Madness and Paperboy, I needed to get an NES console to play them on. Off to eBay I went. Looking around, I was a bit surprised at the prices at some of the units. Pedro Games listed their NES consoles around $60, had decent feedback (98.8%), and seemed to know their stuff. Part of the reason the prices were somewhat high on these 25 year old systems was their “new 72 pin” that are installed. Ok, well I can get into that if it helps the system out.
Ethan Austin is the spokesman for Sugarloaf Mountain ski area in Carrabassett Valley, Maine. His comment describing today’s ski lift accident was that it was a “big deal”. 5 ski lift chairs fell after a ski lift malfunction and at least 3 or so people have injured with 2 people confirmed to be en route to a hospital in Farmington, Maine.
Sugarloaf took to their Facebook to notify people of the accident.
God damn. This new ABC News boss Ben Sherwood sounds like he’s got some enemies in the news world. He looks like a serious d-bag in the photo to the right. But the video below takes his recent acceptance speech in front of the ABC News staff and places some very non-flattering statements throughout such as his privileged upbringing in Beverly Hills. One message even states that Sherwood lied about his mother being sick with cancer. He allegedly left his last job using this excuse in fear of his imminent firing.
Gawker (I think) are the first to post this Sherwood story with a recent update of many employees writing in with his email missteps and other stuff.
I saw this unlocked FedEx dropoff box on lunch today. A FedEx driver must have forgotten to lock this particular dropoff box. Maybe he/she had a lot on their mind. Hope no one snags that single package!
If you’ve been to Las Vegas in the past few years, then you definitely know about the CityCenter, a massive 76 acre project right on the Las Vegas Strip adjacent to the Monte Carlo and Bellagio. Within CityCenter are condos, a casino, shopping mall and entertainment, and hotels. CityCenter is the largest privately funded construction project in the history of the United States. It’s no joke. Six workers have died during its construction.
From the Consumerist. A Maryland Kmart posted a sign up asking people not to open packages. Seems like a reasonable request, amirite? The catch is, the sign is written in Spanish only. Apparently only Spanish people open up the new packages in Kmart. Read the Rest
